Looking back over history, it turns out that in a street very close to Paral.lel, but well within the maze of streets known as the Raval, and particularly known as “Barrio Chino”, there once stood a lofty theatre. This building, greatly frequented by the public, has made it this far in the form of a decrepit ruin that now spends its days precariously propping up a facade and the occasional, and by-now forgotten wall. Not completely unexpectedly, its apparent uselessness, immorality or problem, has been seen as the opportunity to build a new hotel which is not clear whether it is supposed to entice or house the tourists, necessary or inevitable, that arrive in the city of Barcelona. El mar, la costa, los pinos. La isla de Mallorca y su configuración originaria. Cuando el ser humano no tiene el poder absoluto ha de ingeniárselas dialogando con la naturaleza. Pero cuando se pretende un grado de control reducido al ordeno y mando, tan del gusto del hombre actual, no acostumbran a surgir relaciones memorables. El hombre cada vez se esfuerza menos en escuchar aquello que le rodea.

L’HOTEL ACTA MIMIC HA PERDUT LA SEVA FAÇANA: TENIR REMEI, O NO TENIR-NE

Un conjunt de factors han coincidit al carrer de l’Arc del Teatre fent que un tram d’aquest carrer, entre el de Pere Camps i l’avinguda del Paral.lel, es pugui observar d’una manera particular enmig de dos edificis nous molt singulars per les seves façanes.

Un dels dos edificis és un nou edifici administratiu encara per inaugurar que pertany a la Seguretat Social i que exhibeix un volum ben delineat col.locat enmig de tot i calculadament separat, tant de la mitgera veïna com de les cases del davant. És un edifici folrat absolutament amb una gàbia metàl.lica de delgues i lames horitzontals que amaguen la veritable façana i impossibiliten qualsevol referència al nombre de plantes. No és un recurs original i, en els temps actuals, hem pogut veure el mateix aplicat a poliesportius, com el de l’entrada del parc de la Ciutadella, de fusta; o en teatres com la reforma d’El Molino. Edificis que amaguen tots la seva condició darrere d’aquestes teranyines que eviten el problema de la composició de la façana. A Barcelona, un dels primers va ser el petit gratacel d’Autopistes de la plaça Gal.la Placídia, revestit amb una gàbia d’alumini de geometria hexagonal concebut encara com més pròxim a les gelosies que als camuflatges contemporanis. NEW & SPOT: HOTEL ACTA MIMIC

The decision was taken to preserve a historic facade, despite the fact that it is not officially protected, and to insert the building between it and the party wall of the adjacent building. The aim of the huge wrap covering the facade is for the building’s appearance to change during the day both from inside the rooms and from the street, while lighting conditions also vary on the inside and on the outside. It is a commitment to integration with the variety of the surrounding buildings. The public areas in the building, below street level, are treated heterogeneously to generate cosy corners and different ambiences. A variety of forms, colours and furniture is offered, as an extension of the street-level dynamism that is not actually within sight. And on the contrary, the rooms are imbued with sobriety to make for easy adaptation to the tourist’s decisions. From the inside of the room a direct visual relationship is established with the street through the shower area, located on the facade, and the huge wrap which, with the help of vinyl, protects it from the eyes of the street.
