¡ARRIBA EL TELÓN!

Luchando con el actual imperativo de sobriedad y economía de recursos, EQUIP Xavier Claramunt ha desarrollado este hotel en el casco antiguo de Barcelona. El edificio, un antiguo teatro, exhibe un espíritu escandaloso y exhibicionista gracias a la gran tela que lo recubre, una oportunidad tanto para destacar como para tamizar la luz.

El hotel Mimic se emplaza en el solar del Teatro Colón, dentro del barcelonés barrio de El Raval, no muy lejos de la avenida del Paral·lel, donde todos sus primos ricos tenían sus sedes. De las instalaciones del teatro sólo se conservaba la fachada principal y los muros que la trababan, y la parte de la cubierta del foyer aún daba cobijo a un número indeterminado de personas que tendían la ropa en el selvático patio y cotilleaban por detrás de los edificios de la zona. Un edificio contiguo al teatro, esquina calle del Olm, también formaba parte de la actuación. El encargo ha consistido en insertar un edificio, una pieza entre medianeras que debía responder a un programa de hotel. Continue reading →

EQUIP XAVIER CLARAMUNT: HOTEL ARC DEL TEATRE

Spanish practice EQUIP xavier claramunt has completed ‘Hotel Arc del Teatre’, a multi-storey accommodation located in barcelona’s historical neighborhood of el raval. a conversion project of a former theatre, the design preserves the original facade of the building – essentially conserving the memory of the structure – by wrapping the expansive face with a translucent screen.
Drawing from the high dynamism of the site’s streetlife, the project explores ways in which the transference of energy can be established without losing the boundary of privacy, exploring the notion of ‘exhibitionist’ architecture. Featuring a recessed ground level entry, a public plaza is generated which extends the street into the building and behind the hotel. An outdoor area covered in gravel on the south side offers views into a buried courtyard. Continue reading →

Reinventar, acercarse a la gente y proponer constantemente. Xavier Claramunt lo tiene claro y, al frente de su equipo, siempre busca sorprender con ideas diferentes. Si nos centramos en la tipología hotelera –en este artículo presentamos el último hotel que ha diseñado: Arc del Teatre, en Barcelona–, proyectos como Chic&Basic (DI 168), donde el huésped determina su propio alojamiento, o el de un hotel en el espacio (Galactic Suite) que, en teoría, debería estar orbitando en 2012, son, quizá, sus propuestas más destacadas. ARC DEL TEATRE, UN HOTEL EXHIBICIONISTA DE EQUIP XAVIER CLARAMUNT EN BARCELONA

Frente al imperativo de sobriedad pero atendiendo a la economía de recursos, Equip Xavier Claramunt recupera un antiguo teatro en ruinas del barrio de El Raval para diseñar Hotel Arc del Teatre, un edificio que ellos mismos definen de “escandaloso y exhibicionista”. Los muros decrépitos son entendidos aquí como una oportunidad para ampliar la oferta hotelera que atraiga al turismo.
Equip Xavier Claramunt decide conservar una fachada histórica, aunque no está protegida, e inserir la construcción entre esta y la medianera de la edificación vecina. La nueva construcción trata el cuerpo de habitaciones como si se tratara de una estantería y utiliza patios de luz, recurso propio edificaciones del casco antiguo, para dotar de identidad a los espacios comunes, que se sitúan por debajo del nivel de la calle. Priorizando el buen gusto, la comodidad y el diseño, el hotel Acta Mimic deslumbra en la ciudad de Barcelona.

Ubicado en el casco antiguo de la ciudad de Barcelona, el hotel boutique Acta Mimic es una nueva alternativa “low cost” con un espectacular diseño. El proyecto estuvo a cargo del arquitecto Xavier Claram unt, quien se encargó de convertir el edificio que albergaba el antiguo Teatro Colón en un hotel con 92 modernas habitaciones. El hotel se ubica en el centro de Barcelona, en el corazón del barrio del Raval, y a pocos minutos de Las Ramblas, el Puerto de Barcelona y también de los teatros de la Avenida Paral·lel. Teniendo en cuenta que una de las premisas de trabajo de EQUIP Xavier Claramunt es la constante reinvención de la manera de entender las cosas, el recientemente inaugurado hotel Arc del Teatre (Acta Mimic Hotel), es, según ellos mismos lo definen, un edificio escandaloso y exhibicionista, que lucha de forma insolente con el actual imperativo de sobriedad y economía de recursos. La propuesta opta por mantener la fachada histórica insertando la nueva construcción entre ésta y la medianera, envolviendo el volumen resultante con un telón de misterio y glamour. SLEEP: HOTEL IN BARCELONA

The formerly disreputable old-town area of Raval in Barcelona has for some time now become a trendy district. Nowadays, modern bars, restaurants and museums here co-exist with ramshackle buildings from the 19th century. In 1995, a shining white UFO landed in this dense old-town structure – Richard Meier’s museum ofcontemporary art. Morethan 15 years later, new architectures still look like alien elements. This is also the case of the Acta Mimic Hotel by EQUIP Xavier Claramunt. Yet this is far from a new building but the transformation of a dilapidated theatre. Only the façades have been preserved. As a second shell, in front of them the architect has suspended gigantic, translucent vinyl fabric with glaring-colourful scenes from comics. With this design, EQUIP wanted to be anything but politically correct. Glaring colours and expressive furniture embody the dynamic of the street; organically shaped courtyards admit light into the lobbies on the lowerlevel. On the otherhand, the rooms with just a few splashes of colour radiate tranquillity.

The city still puts on quite a show. Struggling insolently with the prevailing imperative of sobriety and economy of resources, we are presenting an outrageous and exhibitionist building.
Looking back over history, it turns out that in a street very close to Parallel, but well within the maze of streets known as the Raval, and particularly known as ‘Barrio Chino’, there once stood a lofty theater. NEW & SPOT: HOTEL ACTA MIMIC

The decision was taken to preserve a historic facade, despite the fact that it is not officially protected, and to insert the building between it and the party wall of the adjacent building. The aim of the huge wrap covering the facade is for the building’s appearance to change during the day both from inside the rooms and from the street, while lighting conditions also vary on the inside and on the outside. It is a commitment to integration with the variety of the surrounding buildings. The public areas in the building, below street level, are treated heterogeneously to generate cosy corners and different ambiences. A variety of forms, colours and furniture is offered, as an extension of the street-level dynamism that is not actually within sight. And on the contrary, the rooms are imbued with sobriety to make for easy adaptation to the tourist’s decisions. From the inside of the room a direct visual relationship is established with the street through the shower area, located on the facade, and the huge wrap which, with the help of vinyl, protects it from the eyes of the street.
